The Conscious and Subconscious mind

In the previous article we discussed what was subconscious mind and about the power within us. In this article, I will share an example to showcase the power of subconscious mind and will explain the outstanding differences and modes of operation between the two minds.

Once Lata Mangeshkar, the nightingale of India, was struck with stage fright. Her vocal words felt paralyzed, useless. She stood back stage, already in costume, while perspiration poured down her face. In a few moments she was supposed to go out on the stage and sing, before thousands of audience. “I can’t sing. They will laugh at me. My career is finished”, she said. She turned to go back to her dressing room. Then, suddenly, she stopped and shouted, “The Little Me is trying to strangle the Big Me within!”
She turned to go back to stage again and stood taller. “Get out of here,” she commanded, addressing the Little Me. “The Big Me wants to sing through me.” She began to shout, “Get out, get out, the Big Me is going to sing!” By the Big Me, Lataji meant the limitless power and wisdom of her subconscious mind. Her subconscious mind responded by releasing the vital forces within her. When her named was called, she walked out on stage and sang gloriously.

The Difference:-
The conscious mind is like the navigator or captain on the bridge of the ship. He sends orders to men and women. They in turn follow his orders. The people do not know where they are going: they just follow orders. They obey him because he is in charge. In the same way, your conscious mind is the captain and the master of your ship, i.e. your body, your environment, and all your affairs. Your subconscious mind just takes orders you give it, based on what your conscious mind thinks and believes. It does not question the orders.

You must remember that the conscious and the subconscious are not two minds. They are just two spheres of activity within one mind. Your conscious mind is the reasoning mind. It is that phase of mind that chooses. On the other hand your subconscious mind accepts what is impressed upon it or what you consciously believe. It does not reason things out as your conscious mind does, and nor does argue. Your subconscious mind is like a bed of soil that accepts any kind of seed, good or bad. Your thoughts are active: they are the seeds. The most important point to remember is this: Once your subconscious mind accepts and idea, it begins to execute it.
